EPIK Employment Contract Summary
Contract Period
Contracts with one of MOE or POE offices are for a period of 1 year and can be extended for longer periods. During the year applications for teaching posts in South Korea can be made at any time. There are main intake periods for new teachers in February and August each year.
MOE: Seoul,Busan,Daegu,Incheon, Gwangju,Daejon, Ulsan,Sejong
POE: Gyounggi,Gangwon,Chungbuk,Chungnam,Jeonnam,Jeonbuk,Gyoungbuk, Gyoungnam, Jeju
Salary
Work Place
Employees shall work at any location operated by the Education office, including schools
( public schools), provincial or local office of Educaion , training centres, or any other educational institutes located in the Jurisdiction of Jeollanam- do office of Education.
Working Hours
Working hours are from 9.00am to 5.00pm Monday to Friday and actual teaching hours are usually 20-22 hours a week which includes a one hour workshop( speaking lesson for Korean English teachers at school) a week with Korean teachers.
One class lasts 40 minutes in primary schools, 45 -50 in secondary schools.
Duties
-
Assist Korean teachers with their English class(es) and/or jointly conduct English class(es) with Korean teachers, and/or lead extracurricular activities of English camps. ( 70% by a native English teacher and 30% by Korean teacher ideally)

Prepare teaching materials and lesson plans for English class(es).

Assist with and/or lead the development and creation of teaching materials related to English language education.

Assist with and/or lead activities related to English languag education and other extracurricular activities such as but not limited to editing or creating English documents, judging contests, conducting teacher training, working at English camp, etc.
Leave ( Annual leave / Sick leave / Special leave )
During the year employees are entitled to 32 days paid annual leave per year, during the summer holiday 8 days leave can be taken and 24 days during the winter holiday.
It is flexible to use more days in summer holiday taken from winter holiday.The duration of the annual leave shall include saturdays,sundays and national holidays of Korea.
During the year employees are entitled to a maximum of 11 days paid sick leave.
Special paid leaves are as follows;

Five (5) days for the employee's marriage ( paid leave)

One(1) day for the marriage of the employee's child (paid leave)

Five (5) days for paternity leave for the father( paid leave)

Five (5) days for in family bereavement (paid leave)

Ninety (90) days for a maternity leave (60days - paid leave, 30days - unpaid leave)

Five (5) days for the dealth of the employee's parents or spouse or spouse's parents ( paid leave)

Two (2) days for the dealth of the employee's or spouse's grandparents/ two(2) days for the death of the employee's child or child's spouse/ one (1) day for the death of the employee's or spouse's siblings

Female employee with a child aged less than one year shall be entitled to thirty(30)-minute-nursing time ( breast feeding) twice a day.
Accommodation (free)
In addition to your monthly salary an allowance is also provided to cover the cost of accommodation that will usually be a furnished studio flat or furnished single bedroom house. Although the cost of accommodation is covered, teachers will be responsible for paying utility bills.

Allowance/ Benefits ( Including free airtickets( inbound, outbound))
When you arrive in South Korea you will be given a 'settlement fee' of 1,300,000 Won
(Approximately 760 GBP/1040 EUR ) which will cover the cost of the flight ticket to South Korea. Upon completion of your contract you will receive the same amount to cover the cost of a return flight. In addition to this settlement fee you will be provided an 'entrance allowance' of approximately 180 GBP/240 EUR.
British employees are eligible for exemption from Korean income tax during the first 2 years if they provide 'residence certificate' (QTKorea will assist you with this)
If you commence a new contract following your first year of employment you will be given 2,000,000 Won (approximately 1200GBP/1600EUR one time).
In the case of renewal of this Contract, the employee shall be given one week paid leave ( inclusive of weekends and national holidays)
The employee will have approximately 120 GBP/160 EUR per month of pay increase in the second year contract.
Employees working in rural areas ( Goheung, Wando, Sinan, Jindo) will be entitled to a 'rural allowance' of approximately 120GBP/160EUR per month.
If employees work in more than one school employees will be entitled to a further allowance of between approximately 80GBP per month.
The employee shall be entitled to severance pay, upon successful completion of the final contract with the concerned employer.
The empolyer may provide a special allowance to an emplyee who has made a great contribution to the employer and/ or who is determined to work at a special institute by the employer
Also, the employer will provide 50% of the cost of the employee's health insurance premium, including that of the employee's spouse or children's policies. (each 2.82%, monthly contribution)
The employee must contribute 4.5% of their monthly salary toward the national state pension scheme. According to the social security agreement ( in 2000) between The UK and South Korea, the employee is not eligible to reclaim these contributions unless the employee has worked for a period of 10 years or more.
The same policy is applied to Korean employees who work in the UK.
